2019 Diabetic Lower Extremity Symposium in Boston

The 4th Annual Meeting of Rongxiang Xu, MD, Center for Regenerative Therapeutics of Harvard Medical School- Diabetic Lower Extremity Symposium, and the 6th Regenerative Medicine Symposium of International Society for Regeneration Medicine and Wound Repair (ISRMWR) were held in Boston on November 7th and 8th.

It was hosted by Rongxiang Xu, MD, Center for Regenerative Therapeutics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) which affiliated to Harvard Medical School and Wyss Institute at Harvard University, and co-hosted by ISRMWR. The main theme of the meeting is From Innovation to Therapy. Hundreds of experts and scholars of different fields attended the meeting and discussed innovative ideas and techniques for treatments of diabetic foot ulcers and other chronic wounds.

The meeting started at 1 pm EST on November 7th at Joseph B. Martin Center of Harvard Medical School. The sessions covered a wide range of topics related to diabetic lower extremity diseases, including pathophysiology, methods for diagnosis and treatments and so on. In addition to in-depth lectures, the poster session also attracted participants with many ongoing projects.

The 6th Regenerative Medicine Symposium of ISRMWR started at 4:15 pm EST, hosted by Dr. Aristidis Veves, Director of Rongxiang Xu, MD, Center for Regenerative Therapeutics at BIDMC of Harvard Medical school. Three speakers were invited from the United States, Egypt, and the Philippines to present at the symposium.

Dr. Erin Wei from the Brigham and Women's Hospital in the United States gave a speech entitled "Clinical Presentation and Management of Epidermolysis Bullosa—Lessons for Wound Healing" In the speech, she detailed the causes, complications and future treatment prospects of this rare disease. Epidermolysis Bullosa not only affects the skin, but also affects multiple systems of the human body. It could seriously impact the quality of life of patients and even threaten their lives. To date, many Epidermolysis Bullosa patients have been successfully cured by regenerative medicine. We hope to continue exploring in this field and have more patients benefit from regenerative medicine in the future.

Dr. Mahmoud Sakr from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, gave a speech entitled "Assessment of Regenerative Therapy in Healing of Diabetic Foot Ulcers". Dr. Mahmoud Sakr has more than 30 years of experience in application of Moist Exposed Burn Ointment. He presented a global multi-center clinical trial led by him. The results showed that the application of Moist Exposed Burn Ointment significantly accelerated wound healing while reducing amputation rate. In Q&A session, Dr. Mahmoud Sakr explained that the ointment can act on four stages of wound healing, thus it can prevent and reduce scar formation.

The last speaker was Dr. Mirela Mijares from the Cebu City Medical Center in the Philippines. Her presentation was entitled "Wound Management with Moist Exposed Burn Ointment- a Ten-Year Personal Experience". Dr. Mirela Mijares has been applying Moist Exposed Burn Ointment since 2008 and she is one of the first group of doctors who used it in Cebu City. She presented that 5,473 patients have been cured by being treated with Moist Exposed Burn Ointment within 11 years, including patients with burns of different causes and patients with other types of acute or chronic wounds. Many clinical cases she shared have drawn attention from participating experts.

After Regenerative Medicine Symposium ended, participants continued to exchange ideas, and had in-depth discussions with the speakers.

The 5th Annual Meeting of Rongxiang Xu, MD, Center for Regenerative Therapeutics of Harvard Medical School will be held in Thailand in November 2020. The Meeting will be hosted by Rongxiang Xu, MD, Center for Regenerative Therapeutics of BIDMC affiliated to Harvard Medical School and ISRMWR. Experts of regenerative medicine will gather again, and we are looking forward to meeting you in Phuket, Thailand next year.
